Who it suits — and who should skip it
This is for tight shoulders and a stiff back at the end of the day, and for people who want ten minutes of doing nothing that still feels like something. Lie on it, breathe, get up warmer and looser than you were.
Skip it if you cannot tolerate the first sessions: the plastic points are genuinely sharp to begin with, and most people need a shirt between skin and mat for the first week or two. Skip it too if you have circulation problems or fragile skin without asking a doctor.
The first two weeks are the whole battle
- Wear a thin t-shirt at first and drop it once the sensation settles. Starting bare-skinned is why most mats end up in a cupboard.
- Lie down onto it rather than sitting and shuffling back. Dragging across the points is the unpleasant part.
- Ten to twenty minutes, and set a timer — it is very easy to fall asleep on one.
What it is and is not doing
The mechanism is straightforward: thousands of points of pressure across a wide area trigger a strong sensory response, the body responds with a flush of blood flow, and the contrast when you get up is what people describe as relaxation. It is not acupuncture and it is not treating anything specific. As a cheap, drug-free way to close out a day it earns its place; as a therapy it is oversold.
