Before you get in the water

Every bathing culture above has written rules, and they differ more than visitors expect: naked in a German sauna cabin but covered outside it, swimsuit required in an Icelandic lagoon but a thorough naked shower first, a peştemal in an Istanbul hammam, no tattoos in many onsen. Our rulebooks quote the venues’ own house rules with sources and dates, so you can check them yourself.
