Who it suits — and who should skip it

This is for anyone whose hamstrings currently decide how far a pose goes. A block brings the floor up, which lets you hold a position with a straight spine instead of collapsing to reach the ground — and the straight spine is the point of the pose. · ab roller for core work

Skip it if you already reach the floor comfortably in every pose you practise. And the foam can pick up dents or minor cosmetic damage with heavy, regular use, so if you want something that stays pristine, cork is the alternative.

Using two blocks properly

  • Learn the three heights — flat, on its side, on its end. Most people only ever use one and miss the point.
  • Use them in seated poses too, under the hips. Lifting the pelvis changes what a forward fold can do.
  • Two blocks, not one. Asymmetry in a pose is usually a block shortage.

Props are not a beginner label

The persistent idea that props are for people who cannot do the pose gets it backwards: a block lets you hold the shape the pose is actually about, rather than a compromised version of it. Experienced practitioners use them for exactly that reason. If using a block makes a pose feel harder in the right muscles, it is doing its job.
