Parenting Essentials & Baby Must-Haves

The first weeks with a newborn come with more advice than anyone can absorb. Most of it boils down to a handful of routines and a short list of things that genuinely make daily life easier — everything else is a nice-to-have.

The essentials that actually matter early on

What tends to get overbought

Nurseries often end up with far more gear than a newborn needs in the first months. Big-ticket items like changing tables or elaborate monitors are optional conveniences, not requirements — a firm, safe crib, a car seat installed correctly, and a few feeding basics cover the real necessities. It’s usually easier to add specialty items later, once you know what your specific routine actually needs.

Looking after yourself, too

Sleep deprivation and the sheer intensity of the early weeks catch most new parents off guard, even the second or third time around. Accepting help, lowering the bar for what “a good day” looks like, and giving yourself permission to ask questions are as much a part of the essentials as anything you’d put on a registry.
