Algarve, Portugal: Cliff Walks, Coastal Running, and Surf

Sea kayakers below golden limestone cliffs on the Algarve coast in Portugal

The Algarve on the southern coast of Portugal gets treated as a golf-and-beach-resort destination, which undersells it: the same coastline is lined with cliff-top walking trails, the water is warm enough for swimming from late spring through early autumn, and the region has a genuine surf scene around Sagres and Lagos that gets far less attention than the beaches themselves.

Cliff walks and coastal running routes

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos) between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes is the best-known walking route in the region – a 6 km one-way path (12 km there and back, per Visit Algarve) along limestone cliffs with repeated beach access points, so it works equally well as a hike or a broken-up beach run. Sagres, further west, sits on more exposed Atlantic coastline and is the region’s main surf town, with schools offering lessons for complete beginners.

The Seven Hanging Valleys trail is a linear cliff path, so you end up far from your car. A guided Seven Hanging Valleys walk with return transport solves that in about three hours. If you want a winter-sun walking trip in Portugal, Madeira’s levadas are the other option, but there every official trail now needs a timed booking: see our Madeira levada walks guide.

Why a resistance band belongs in a beach bag

Coastal towns in the Algarve are built around small apartments and guesthouses, not resort gyms, so a strength routine here usually means bodyweight work or nothing at all. A set of loop resistance bands closes that gap without needing a rack of weights – useful for a pre-run warmup, a hotel-room session on a rest day, or just keeping some structure going across a longer stay.

Practical notes

  • Swimming season runs roughly May to October; the Atlantic here is noticeably cooler than the Mediterranean even in summer.
  • The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail has minimal shade – an early morning or late afternoon start is worth planning for in summer heat.
  • Sagres has a more exposed, beginner-friendly break than Lagos, which tends to draw a more experienced surf crowd.

Where to stay

For the cliff walks and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, Lagos and the Carvoeiro area are the practical bases; Sagres suits you better if beginner surf is the plan. We have not stayed at a specific hotel and do not recommend one; compare options for your dates: places to stay in Lagos on Booking.com or in Sagres (affiliate links).

Know before you go

Checked against official sources in October 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the source before you travel.

  • Seven Hanging Valleys distance: The trail is 6 km one way, or 12 km there and back. It is a linear route, not a loop. Allow about 3 hours each way. (Visit Algarve)
  • Climb and surface: The trail climbs about 360 m in total from Praia da Marinha, or 370 m from Praia de Vale Centeanes, on somewhat rocky dirt paths. (Visit Algarve)
  • Cliff erosion: Falling rocks are a hazard, especially in the Algarve. Watch for erosion warning signs; the authorities can fine people who ignore them. (UK FCDO)
  • Beach flags: Lifeguarded beaches use a flag system. Red means you must not enter the water, and yellow means paddling at the water’s edge only. If caught in a rip, swim parallel to the shore. (UK FCDO)
  • Fishermen’s Trail season: The Rota Vicentina Fishermen’s Trail is 226.5 km in 13 one-day stages of up to 22.5 km. The stages are meant to be walked between September and June, and 60% to 70% of the trail is sand. (Rota Vicentina)
  • No trail running on it: Rota Vicentina says trail running is not compatible with the care this ecosystem needs, and groups are limited to 15 people. Save your coastal runs for other routes. (Rota Vicentina)
  • Wildfire season: Wildfire risk is higher from April to October. Starting a fire, even by accident, is illegal in Portugal. (UK FCDO)
