Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

Rated above 4 stars by more than 2,000 buyers on Amazon — check the current figure there

A 1.5 mm natural rubber mat, 71 x 24 inches, that folds rather than rolls, so it lies flat in a carry-on instead of strapped to the outside of a bag. Built for practising in hotel rooms, on retreats and outdoors — not as a replacement for a full studio mat.

The catchAt 1.5 mm there is almost no cushioning, so hard floors are felt in the knees and wrists, and multiple buyers report a strong rubber smell that needs several days of airing before the mat is pleasant to use.
  • Folds to roughly the size of a large book and weighs about 0.9 kg, so it genuinely fits in hand luggage
  • Natural tree rubber with a textured surface that still grips on hotel carpet, tiles and decking
  • Works as a hygienic topper over a studio or gym mat you would rather not touch

Who it suits — and who should skip it

This suits someone who practises while travelling and refuses to strap a rolled mat to the outside of a suitcase. It folds instead of rolling, so it lies flat in a carry-on and comes out without the permanent curl a rolled travel mat develops.

Skip it if it would be your only mat. At 1.5 mm there is effectively no cushioning, so hard floors are felt in the knees, wrists and hip bones. It is a second mat for the road, or a topper to lay over a studio mat you would rather not touch.

Getting the most out of a 1.5 mm mat

  • Lay it over a hotel carpet or a folded blanket for kneeling work. The grip stays; the joints get a break.
  • Fold it along the same lines each time. Natural rubber takes a memory, and consistent folds stay flatter than random ones.
  • Air it out for a few days when new. Natural rubber has a distinct smell that fades but is strongest out of the box.

Natural rubber, and what that means for you

Natural tree rubber grips better than PVC when your hands get damp, which is the main reason to accept the weight penalty over a foam travel mat. It also means the mat is not suitable if you have a latex allergy, and that it should be kept out of prolonged direct sunlight, which degrades rubber. Wipe it down rather than soaking it.
